The Peddler's Pack (Sethym) « Thread Started on Dec 30, 2008, 11:22pm »
Rishiara awoke to the feel of the late afternoon sun. Unseeing golden eyes flickered open as she sat up in the back of her wagon, discarding the blanket she’d pulled over herself. She had decided to take a nap as she and Sethym, her companion, made their way through Ghealdan. Stretching some, she realized the wagon had stopped, no longer feeling the motion or hearing the horses’ hooves. “Seth?” She called out “Have we stopped for the day?”
No answer met her ears as she listened for her friend. “Seth…are you here?” There was still no response. Rishi sighed deeply. ‘SnowFang…did Red Brother leave camp while I was asleep?’
’Yes, Thought Seer.’ The pure white wolf responded, jumping up into the wagon beside her. ‘He seemed to be making sure the entire pack was here before he left…’
Rishiara groaned, rather annoyed. Scooting to the edge of the wagon, she let her legs dangle over the back. ‘Has he been gone long?’ She wondered.
’For a while, yes.
Rishi shook her head. Was it really so hard to tell her when he left? She worried about him. Yes, Seth was a woodsman, and had lived on his own for some time before they left Kandor, but he was her best friend, and it was only natural she worried when he wasn’t with her.
Added to that was the fact that it was so unlike him to treat her like that. He never really liked people, she knew, but she wasn’t just anybody…was she? Giving another groan, she crossed her arms, annoyed. “Who goes off and leaves their blind companion without so much as a word?”

Sethym sat on the ground, holding a newborn wolf pup in his tunic. He had left the wagon a few hours ago after making sure that all twenty some odd wolves were present and stationed around Rishiara before he left. He had gone with the intention of scouting the surrounding forest and hunting for the next meal. However, after about half an hour of tracking various animals, he happened upon a site that he had not expected. A large female wolf was laying on her side and didn't appear to be alive anymore, and Seth would have buried the poor animal and been done with it, but he had heard the whining of a cub. So, he had moved the cub aside for a moment and buried the mother before picking the babe up again. He had doffed his tunic to wet it and give the pup something to drink. He had been repeating this for a while until the little female had had enough. As he stood, now that he thought of it, any normal person would have nursed the wolf cub back to health and let it roam free or something like that. But, no. Seth's best friend communicated with wolves.
He started back to the encampment, the wolf cub in his arms and under his tunic. The wolves trusted him enough with being around Rishi unlike anyone else. He wondered how they would take to this new wolflet. The cub was a rich brown in most of her fur and had a few spots of brown. Compared to the others, she was rather...fuzzy rather than furry. She was too tired from her exhausting situation earlier to do much. He hoped she lasted longer than he thought she would. With a pack as large as this one, she stood a good chance of survival.
“Who goes off and leaves their blind companion without so much as a word?”
Seth rolled his eyes when he heard Rishiara complaining. "Well, I would have been back before you woke up...but I was a bit...diverted," he said flatly, walking in front of her. "Also, I made sure to count all your wolves to make sure that you were protected. That also took a good bit of time." The cub wiggled a bit in his arms and went back to dreaming. He watched as a few of the wolves walked up to see the pup and he waited for her answer. "How did you sleep?"

"Well, I would have been back before you woke up...but I was a bit...diverted,"
Rishiara gave a slight start. She’d been so distracted that she hadn’t heard him approach. Normally, she would’ve heard him coming, but not this time.
"Also, I made sure to count all your wolves to make sure that you were protected. That also took a good bit of time."
She crossed her arms at that. Did he think she couldn’t fend for herself if the need came? She was blind, but capable of a lot. She just worried for him…was that such a bad thing? It was tempting to tell him that he needn’t count them; she knew she had twenty-four wolves in her pack. She was about to tell him exactly what was on her mind when he spoke again.
"How did you sleep?"
With a sigh, Rishi’s annoyance deflated somewhat. She could tell he was concerned for her, even if he did have a strange way of showing it lately. She fixed her unseeing gaze on the spot where she figured he was standing, based on his voice.
“Well, what diverted you for so long?” She asked, voice calm. “Did you have any luck hunting?” She scooted to the edge of the wagon and stood, able to sense that he was standing close to her. She heard SnowFang jump down beside her.
’Red Brother has shed some of his fur…is he alright?’ The white wolf observed. He too walked up to investigate the cub. MoonWish wagged her tail happily, having already accepted the pup, as far s she was concerned.
‘Yes, he’s fine.’ Rishi silently answered the wolf’s question, unaware of the newcomer. “Why did you take your tunic off? It seems to have slightly confused the wolves.” She asked Seth curiously. She’d learned when SnowFang said ‘fur’ he meant clothing, and she was relatively sure he had not removed his pants. “I know it’s been hot, but I didn’t think it was that hot…” Rishi was dressed in a simple linen dress, idea for the amount of travel she endured, and thin enough to keep her cool.
