Name: Torquin Vallerin
Age: 45
Nationality: Kandori
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Allegiance: The White Tower
Occupation: Captain of the White Tower Guard
Appearance: Torquin is very much your average Kandori male. He stands quite tall at about 6’6”, and is quite muscular from his years of hard work. He has shortly kept black hair, and wears the typical Kandori forked beard. His eyes are a very dark green, and his skin is well tanned. Torquin’s facial features are quite prominent, and can appear stern and serious, especially when dealing with his duties as the Captain of the Guard. While on duty, he wears the Guard uniform, much like the rest of his men. The uniform is, however, slightly different so that he is easily recognized as the Captain of the Guard. On his down time, he dresses in relatively average clothing, preferring dark colors when possible. Any time he leaves his quarters, he is sure to have his sword at the ready.
Personality: Torquin seems very much the strong silent type when one first meets him. He takes his duties quite seriously, and has no problem taking a firm hold on things and doing what must be done in the situation. He has a very commanding presence, and uses it to keep his men on task at all times. People who see him away from his job, and interact with him on a more personal level, are often surprised to learn that underneath his rather gruff exterior, Torquin is a rather friendly man. He has a good sense of humor, and enjoys sharing a good laugh with someone he considers a friend. He is also quite loyal to both the White Tower, and each and every one of the Aes Sedai within. He is proud of his rank among the Guard, ad considers it his personal task to do whatever is necessary to keep the Tower inhabitants safe.
Items: Art Supplies: Torquin likes to paint as a means of relaxation, and so he keeps art supplies in his room. He’s also sure to carry some with him should he ever have to travel.
Weapons: Sword: Torquin uses a sword that was given to him by his father. It had been his grandfather’s, and was forged by the best blacksmith in all of Malkier. It is still in excellent condition; Torquin sees to that.
Talents: Swordsmanship: Growing up so close to the Blight meant that Torquin understood he must know how to defend himself, even at a young age. From quite a young age, he trained with his father, gaining skill and strength as he did so. Leadership: Not surprisingly, as Captain of the Guard, Torquin has discovered e has a knack for issuing orders and being obeyed. He knows when to take control of a situation, and what orders to give. He’s quite good at thinking on his feet when the situation calls for it. Painting: Most surprisingly of his talents is his skill at painting. It is not something he lets many people know about, concerned his men will not take him as seriously if they knew about it. It’s nothing wonderful in his yes, just something he does to relieve the vast amounts of stress related to his job. It also helps to calm his nerves after particularly long days at work. He often carries the paintings he does into town and trades them to a local store in exchange for more art supplies.
History: Torquin was born the oldest of five children, three boys and two girls. His parents were both born and raised in Malkier, meeting and marrying there shortly before leaving for Kandor. His parents adopted the culture of their new home, and raised their children as Kandori.
From a young age, Torquin, as the first son and oldest child, realized the importance of learning swordplay. He wanted desperately to protect his family, so he began to train with his father. He became quite skilled at it and gained quite a reputation in their small town. When he was sixteen, Torquin moved with the rest of his family to Chachin, and by the age of eighteen, Torquin had joined the Kandori Royal Guard, proud to serve his country. When he began to work with the royal Guard, Torquin’s father gave him his grandfather’s sword. He has kept it at his side every day ever since.
While working as a Guard, he met the love of his life, Luciana. Luciana was a young Gray Aes Sedai hired to serve as an advisor to the king. She and Torquin quickly fell in love, having met while he was on rounds. He came across her sitting in a rarely used room, painting. Most of their time off was spent in each other’s company, and Luciana told him once that, did she not already have a Warder, she would bond him.
When he was twenty-seven, some six years after first meeting Luciana, he was distraught to discover she and her Warder had both been killed while accompanying the King on a trip. The party was attacked by Trollocs, and besides the Aes Sedai and her Gaidin, there had been three other fatalities. Torquin soon decided he wanted to do his best to honor his love’s memory, and thought a good way to do that was to keep other Aes Sedai safe. With that thought in mind, he resigned from the Kandori royal Guard and began the move to Tar Valon. It was also then that he took up painting. It seemed like another way he could honor Luciana’s memory.
Once he arrived there, he applied for a position with the Tower Guard. His ten years of excellent service with the Kandori Royal guard spoke highly of his skill, and Torquin made his way quickly through the ranks. When he was thirty-five, Torquin was promoted to Captain of the Guard after the previous Captain had been bonded to a Blue Aes Sedai. He felt like this new position gave him the best chance to protect the Aes Sedai, second only in that ability to the Warders themselves. He dedicated himself to his job whole-heartedly, and has done so for the last ten years.
Torquin has never really wanted to bond to an Aes Sedai, despite having been approached a few times. It isn’t that he doesn’t want to be a Warder, only that he has yet to see an Aes Sedai He would want that sort of connection with. He realizes Warders and their Aes Sedai have a very close bond, and part of him, although he will not admit it outright, is hesitant to form that sort of connection, given the pain he suffered when Luciana died.
